EBCT Scan
Coronary heart disease is often silent and can go unnoticed until the patient has a heart attack. EBT can detect the earliest stages of coronary heart disease, ten to fifteen years before it may become apparent. This allows lifestyle change and treatment early on, thereby dramatically reducing the risk of a heart attack.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an EBT scan?
EBT is short for 'Electron Beam Tomography'. An EBT machine uses the latest scanning technology to generate 3-D images of the heart. The high-resolution images allow doctors to diagnose early-stage heart disease. This is a non-invasive test, which has been already used intensively in the United States and other parts of Europe.
Who is a candidate?
Candidates include men aged over 35 and women aged over 45, or anyone with a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure. All smokers should also consider having an EBCT scan.
Why have an EBCT scan?
The EBCT scan allows risk assessment long before any actual symptoms occur. Many people are unaware of their risk of heart disease until faced with an actual heart attack. At least 25 percent of people who suffer heart attacks had no previous signs.
Who is NOT a candidate?
Anyone with documented heart disease is unlikely to benefit. EBCT is most useful for the PREVENTION of heart events.
What will the scan tell me?
The scan will detect calcium deposits in the heart's arteries. Calcium deposits cause clogging of the arteries. The amount of calcium will be scored, and your risk of suffering a coronary event will be assessed from this.
